Ford entered the light-truck market with the Model T. The first models were sold as a cab and chassis, to which the customer added a body.

Ford built its first factory assembled pickup truck and sold it for $281. Based on the Model T, the truck featured a cargo box, adjustable tailgate, four stake pockets and heavy duty rear springs. Customers who neded a longer heavy duty pickup could choose the Model TT 1-ton pickup with an 8-foot Express Body

1928
The Model A replaced the Model T, adding a safety glass windshield, roll-up side windows and a 3-speed transmission. It was powered by a 40-horsepower 4-cylinder engine.

1932
The Model B truck marked a complete redesign, along with more available power delivered by Ford Motor Company's new Flathead V-8, which introduced V-8 power to the mass market. The Flathead V-8 was available in cars (Model 18) and trucks (Model BB)

1948
The first F-Series was unveiled. The half-ton F-1 featured a 95-horsepower 6-cylinder engine, one-piece windshield, recessed grille and headlamps. A 100-horsepower V-8 engine was optional.

1950
Ford redesigned the F-Series front overhang and wheelbase for improved weight distribution and turning diameter. Styling changes included a larger, curved windshield and new instrument panel, grille, shorter fenders and a downward slooping hood.

1953
F-Series changed its numbering system from single digits to hundreds; this F-1 became the F-100.

1957
A slab-sided pickup box was introduced as the Styleside. The fendered pickup box then became known as the Flareside. F-100 introduced a new Y-block V-8 engine with 272 cubic inches of displacement, 167 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque.

The famous industry-first Twin I-Beam suspension debuted, improving ride comfort.

1973
Another redesign brought a longer wheelbase, new doors, floor pan, roof and instrument panel.

1974
Supercab was introduced, adding 44 cubic feet behind the driver's seat with either a bench seat or two jump seats. This development set the stage for further growth in the personal-use of pickup trucks.

1980
A revoluntionary redesign gave F-150 a more finished and car-like interior in response to customer needs. The swept-back front end helped improve aerodynamics, 4x4 models featured a Twin Traction Beam independent front suspension with coil springs.

A rear Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) became standard.

Safety innovations included a standard driver's-side airbag

1997
A complete redesign introduced a new platform, new engines, new aerodynamic styling and the industry-first standard 3-door Supercab. The modular SOHC Triton engine family was first offered on the 1997 F-150.

2000
F-150 SuperCrew became the only full-size pickup in its class to offer a full rear seat and front-hinged rear doors. SuperCrew featured a 5.5-foot pickup box that extended to 7 feet with the optional bed extender, providing cargo carrying flexibility in addition to its passenger-carrying capability.
